海外旅行のついでにゴルフを楽しむ人やゴルフを目的にハワイやオーストラリアへ出かける人も多いと思います。

また、日本のゴルフ場でも外国人と一緒にプレーする機会の多い人もいるでしょう。

そんな時に、あなたが英語で困らないようにと、ゴルフ用語や簡単な会話ができる英語の知識を身につけておきましょう。

たとえ一口会話でも、できるとできないとでは、ゴルフの楽しさが全く違います。

ティーグラウンド、フェアウェイ、グリーンのそれぞれのシーンに分けて英語でゴルフに挑戦してみましょう。

ここでは、フェアウェイでのゴルフ用語と一口英会話を紹介しています。

フェアウェイをキープする
�@keep (my ball on) the fairway

　フェアウェイをキープした。
“I kept my ball on the fairway.”
“I put my ball on the fairway.”

フェアウェイキープ率
driving accuracy

　彼のフェアウェイキープ率は64.9%だ。
“His driving accuracy is 64.9%.”

芝生に浮いている
The ball is sitting up

申し分のないライだ。
“Its ａ perfect lie.”

　ちょっと左ですね。
“You are slightly off to the left.”

　だいぶ左ですね。
“You are way (off) to the left.”

距離感
feel (ing) for distance

　距離感がいい。
“You have a good feel for distance.”

あとどれくらいですかね？
�@“How many yards to go?”
�A“How far is it?”

　距離を判断するのはむつかしい
“It's hard to judge the distance.”

　6番アイアンで池を超えられると思う？
“Can I carry the pond with a six-iron?”

｢越える｣にはcarryの他にget overやcut over、clearなども使えます。

　5番アイアンで池を超えられるかな？

　ちょっと無理かもしれませんね。

　思ったより距離があります。
“It's longer than you think.”

　距離はぴったりでしたね。
“You got the range［distance］perfectly.”
“Try to aim to the left of the trees.”
「やや左側」ならaimのあとにslightlyをつけます。

　あの林のやや右側を狙ったほうがいいですよ。
“Try to aim slightly to the right of the trees.”

　右側のあの池に気を付けて。
“Watch out for that pond on the right side.”

１つ大きいクラブ

⇔1つ小さいクラブ
one less club

　クラブが大きすぎた。
That was too much club.
⇔小さすぎた。
That was too little club.

｢よかったかもしれませんね｣だったら、shouldやcouldのかわりにmightを使います。

　もう１つ小さいクラブのほうがよかった。
“You should've used one less club.”

　ワンクラブが短かった。
“You were one club short.”

成功率の高いクラブ
percentage club

　深いラフから打つときは成功率の高いクラブを使いなさい。
“Use ａ percentage club when hitting from the deep rough.”

when hitting＝when you are hittingです。
口語ではしばしばこの形が使われます。

ショート・アイアン
short iron

　今日はショート・アイアンの調子がいい。
“Short iron shots are good today.”

ロング・アイアン
long iron

　今日はロング・アイアンの調子がよくない。
“Long iron shots are not good today.”

ミドル・アイアン
midiron

　ミドル・アイアンが苦手だ。
“Ｉ'ｍ bad at midiron shots.”

右足下がり

　池ポチャだ。

�A“I plopped it into the water.”
plopは｢ポチャンと落とす｣という意味です。
�B“I landed in the water.”

　バンカーだ。
�@“I'm bunkered.”
�A“I hit it into the bunker [trap].”
�B“I landed in the bunker.”
バンカーには�@bunker�A(sand) trapが使えます。

　バンカーにつかまったかもしれません。
�@“You might have landed in the bunker.”
�A“You might have found [caught]the trap.”

　バンカーのようです。
“(It) Looks like you found the trap.”

バンカーで3打打つ。
make three strokes in the bunker

　バンカーで３打使った。
“I made three strokes in the bunker.”

　足跡が残らないようにバンカーはよくならしてください。
�@“Rake the bunker well to smooth over your footprints.”
�A“Rake the bunker well so as not to leave your footprints.”

芝を刈り取る
cut the turf

削り取った芝を元に戻すreplace the divot
削り取った芝のことはdivotといいます。

　芝を削り取ったときは、元に戻してください。
“Replace the divot when you cut the turf.”

リカバリーする

トラブルから抜け出す
get out of (the) trouble

　完璧なリカバリーをした。
“He made ａ perfect recovery.”
“He recovered perfectly.”

　なんとかトラブルから抜け出した。
“He managed to get out of trouble.”

冷静に切り抜ける

困難を排してうまくやってのける
pull it of

　冷静に切りぬけた。
“He took it in stride.”

　うまくやってのけた。
“He pulled it off.”

向かい風
headｗind
⇔追い風　tailwind

“We have a headwind.”
　向かい風だ。　　　　　　　　　　　ヽ

　追い風だ。

回っている風
whirlwind

　風が回っている。
“We have ａ whirlwind.”

風はどっちから吹いている？
�@“Which way is the ｗind blowing (from)?”
�A“Which is the direction of the wind?”

　右から左へ吹いています。
“It's blowing from right to left.”

　横風ですね。
“It's blowing across the fairway.”

　後ろから来てますね。
“The wind is coming from behind (us).”

“I'll be hitting [playing] against the wind.”

　ここはフォローだなo。
“The wind is following.”

　ここはアゲインストになりますよ。
“You'll be playing against [into] the wind.”

　ここはフォローになりますよ。　
“You'll be playing with ａ following [down] wind.”
通例、風にはtheをつけますが、strongとかfollowingのような修飾語がつくと、ａがつきます。
